CityCrop by Shriya Bhatnagar

CityCrop is an award-winning start-up that introduces automated indoor farming to Athens, Greece, and soon worldwide. After 2010, due to the political and social unrest in Greece, there began a movement for agro-environmental education and a greater emphasis on sustaining livelihood and food supply. CityCrop is a house-friendly hydroponics system that includes LED lights, nutrient taps, and a built-in water tank that regulates conditions inside the glass case to mimic the appropriate growing seasons of plants. To begin growing plants, one simply opens the app, selects the crop that they want to plant, and follows updates from the app that instruct when to begin planting and harvesting. It also incorporates an app-monitored system that controls the growth of crops and allows for further insight into how the plant is growing, complete with a “plant doctor” setting that allows for on-demand support and guidance for plants with growth difficulties. The plants grown include leafy greens, herbs, fruits, microgreens, and edible flowers (daylily and lavender). By implementing a smart, efficient, and tech-savvy introduction into automated agriculture for the common person as well as experienced growers, CityCrop provides a unique, controlled, introspective experience that would not be possible with traditional growing methods.
